Widening of the existing A1 Newcastle Western Bypass to provide three lanes in each direction between junction 74 (the spur to the Scotswood Bridge) and junction 79 (North Brunton). At present the road is a mix of dual two and dual three lanes.
As with other widening schemes on the A1 Western Bypass further south near Gateshead, the work will be carried out without rebuilding bridge structures, resulting in three narrower running lanes. This will enable the widening work to be carried out relatively quickly and at low cost. A full widening scheme, involving reconstruction of bridges and interchanges, would have been far more expensive and may not have passed a cost/benefit test.
Conventional widening would also require additional land, for changes to earthworks, while this scheme can be carried out within the existing highway boundary - something that makes a major difference to the cost of the scheme and the timescale in which work can begin.
