A15 Lincoln Eastern Bypass

Scheme outline

Construction of a new single two-lane road with roundabout junctions from the A15 Sleaford Road south of Bracebridge Heath, across the River Witham on a new bridge, to the Wragby Road roundabout at the end of the existing northern bypass.

The new road will allow through traffic on the north-south A15 route to avoid passing through the centre of Lincoln, a route that presently involves congested urban roads and a steep hill.

The bypass was originally proposed as a dual two-lane road, but was drastically reduced in scale to gain central government funding.

Planning application submitted.

14 March 2006

The East Midlands Regional Assembly postpones the scheme for at least ten years because of a lack of funding.

16 April 2010

The bypass has been granted approval on a new line, and a new completion date has been set for 2016.

According to a government announcement on 10 June 2010, work has been put on hold pending a financial review in the autumn.

30 October 2010

Following the autumn spending review, this scheme has been allocated to the DfT's pre-qualification group. It will therefore undergo further scrutiny before a final decision is made on whether or not to proceed.

5 February 2011

According to a statement by the Transport Secretary yesterday, this scheme has been moved into the development pool. It will therefore be considered for funding, along with other schemes, in a competitive process. A final decision is due by the end of 2011.

30 November 2011

DfT funding of £50m towards the project was confirmed as part of the National Infrastructure Plan.

8 October 2014

Lincolnshire County Council have announced that they have now redesigned a footbridge which had caused the original proposal to be turned down. The scheme may now be reconsidered by the Department for Transport.

20 December 2014

Another public inquiry is now scheduled for Spring 2015.

18 February 2016

The planning inspector has approved the scheme, with some small modifications to the Side Road and Compulsory Purchase Orders.

12 November 2016

Carillion have been announced as the preferred bidder in the last month.

22 May 2017

On-site work started on 6 December 2016 with Network Rail constructing a new railway bridge adjacent to Washingborough Road, which will allow the new road to run under the railway.

5 November 2017

The bridge over the railway has been completed.

7 February 2019

Work has been halted since Carillion went into administration.

14 July 2019

According to local press, construction is now beyond the halfway point.
